Terms of Service
Last updated: 12 October 2026 · Version 1.0
These terms (“Terms”) cover your use of Rational Flag: the website at rationalflag.com, the app and everything you can do in them (together, the “Service”). Please read them along with our Privacy Notice, which explains how we handle your personal information. By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the Service.
1. Who we are
Rational Flag is run by [your full name / company name] (“we”, “us”), [a company registered in England and Wales, company number [number], registered office [address] / a sole trader based in [town], UK]. You can contact us at support@rationalflag.com.
2. Who can use Rational Flag
- You must be at least 13 years old. If you're under 18, you must have your parent's or guardian's permission to use the Service and to pay for a subscription.
- Your account is just for you. Don't share it, sell it or let anyone else use it.
- You can only have one account unless we agree otherwise.
3. Your account
- Give us a real email address that you can access. We use it for sign-in, password resets and important notices about your account or subscription.
- Keep your password safe. You're responsible for what happens on your account unless it was used without your permission and you weren't at fault.
- Your username is shown to other members. Don't choose one that impersonates someone, is offensive, or uses someone else's brand.
- Tell us straight away at support@rationalflag.com if you think someone has got into your account.
4. Subscription, free trial and payment
- Price. Rational Flag is a paid service costing [£X] per year (including VAT where it applies). We'll always show you the price before you pay.
- Free trial. New members get a 7-day free trial, and you don't need to give payment details to start it. If you add a card during the trial, your subscription starts and you'll be charged the annual price on the day the trial ends, unless you cancel before then. If you don't add one, the trial simply ends and you're not charged anything.
- Renewal. Your subscription renews automatically every year until you cancel. We'll email you a reminder before each renewal, with the price and how to cancel.
- Payments are handled securely by our payment provider, Stripe. We never see or store your full card details.
- Cancelling. You can cancel any time from Account → Manage subscription, or by emailing us. If you cancel, you'll keep access until the end of the period you've already paid for, and you won't be charged again.
- Price changes. If we change the price, we'll tell you at least [30] days before it applies to you, and it will only apply from your next renewal. You can cancel before then if you don't want to continue.
- Failed payments. If a payment fails, we'll let you know. If it isn't sorted out, we may pause your access until it is.
5. Your right to cancel (cooling-off period)
UK law gives you 14 days to change your mind after buying a subscription online.
- If you cancel during your free trial, you won't be charged anything.
- If you're charged and then cancel within 14 days of that payment, we'll give you a refund. We may reduce it to reflect any use of the paid service in that time, as the law allows. [Check with your lawyer or template how you want this to work, including whether the 14 days also applies to each yearly renewal.]
- To cancel, use Account → Manage subscription or email support@rationalflag.com.
Outside these situations we don't usually give refunds for part of a year, but this doesn't affect your legal rights. For example, if the Service is faulty and we can't fix it, you may be entitled to a refund.
6. How sharing works
Rational Flag is built for sharing with people you know, not strangers.
- Friends. You choose who your friends are, either by sending or accepting friend requests or by someone signing up through your invite link. Signing up through someone's invite link makes you friends automatically. You can unfriend or hide someone at any time.
- Who can see your content. Your flags, reviews and photos are visible to your friends. You can mark any visit private so only you can see it. Your pins can be public (visible to your friends) or private.
- Plans. If you share a Plan, other members can see it if they're signed in and have its link or you've shared it with them. Only share Plans with people you're happy to see them.
- Monthly recap email. If you switch on “Push ‘Last month’ to email” in Account, we'll email you a summary of the previous month on the 1st of each month. You can switch it off any time.
- Things your friends can still see. If you change who can see something, it changes in the app straight away. But you can't undo what someone has already seen, remembered or screenshotted.
7. Your content
“Your content” means anything you add to Rational Flag: flags, reviews, ratings, photos, pins, notes, Plans, place names and your flag design.
- You own your content. We don't claim ownership of it.
- What you allow us to do. So we can run the Service, you give us permission to store, copy, display and adapt your content (for example, resize a photo or draw your flag on the map), but only to provide the Service to you and the people you've chosen to share with. This permission is free and worldwide. It ends when you delete the content or your account, except for copies we must keep by law or that are in backups, which are deleted in the normal course of things.
- No promotion. We never use your content, name, photos or flag in our marketing or on our social media.
- Your responsibility. Only post content you have the right to share. If a photo shows other people, make sure they're happy for you to share it. Reviews should be your honest opinion and shouldn't make false statements of fact about people or businesses.
8. Rules for using Rational Flag
You must not use the Service to:
- harass, bully, threaten or abuse anyone, or encourage others to;
- post anything illegal, hateful, sexually explicit, violent, or that encourages harm;
- post private information about someone without their permission, such as a person's home address;
- post false or misleading reviews, including reviews of businesses you own or are paid by;
- impersonate anyone or misrepresent who you are;
- send spam, advertising or chain messages;
- infringe anyone's copyright, trademarks or other rights;
- upload viruses or harmful code, or try to break, overload or get round the Service's security;
- scrape, copy or collect data from the Service using bots or other automated tools;
- use the Service for commercial purposes without our written permission;
- help or encourage anyone else to do any of the above.
9. Reporting and safety
- You can report a review or photo from within the app. We review reports and may remove content or suspend or close accounts that break these Terms.
- Child safety. We do not allow any content that sexually exploits or endangers children. We'll remove it, close the accounts involved, and report it to the relevant authorities (such as the police and the Internet Watch Foundation) where the law requires or allows. Report concerns to support@rationalflag.com. Our child safety contact is [name].
- If you think someone is in immediate danger, contact the emergency services.
10. Places, maps and visiting places
- Maps and business information come partly from Google Maps and partly from other members. We can't guarantee that place details, opening times or reviews are accurate or up to date.
- Reviews are the personal opinions of the members who wrote them, not our views.
- Visiting any place is your own choice and at your own risk. Please take normal care, respect private property and follow local laws.
11. Our rights in the Service
The Service, including its design, illustrations, icons, medals, software and the name “Rational Flag”, belongs to us or our licensors. You may use the Service for your own personal, non-commercial use under these Terms, but you may not copy, sell or reuse any part of it without our permission.
12. Closing your account, and suspending accounts
- You can delete your account at any time from Account → Delete Account. This permanently deletes your account and the content that belongs only to you, including your flags, reviews, photos, pins and Plans. Some information may remain in backups for a short time, or where we must keep it by law, such as payment records. Places you added that others have also used may stay on the map, without your name attached.
- Deleting your account also cancels your subscription straight away, so you won't be charged again. If you're within the 14-day cooling-off period (section 5), you can still ask us for a refund.
- We may suspend or close your account if you seriously or repeatedly break these Terms, if we must for legal reasons, or to protect other members. Where reasonable, we'll tell you why first and give you a chance to fix things. If we close your account without good reason, we'll refund any unused part of your subscription.
13. Availability and changes to the Service
We work hard to keep Rational Flag running smoothly, but we can't promise it will always be available or free of errors. We may change, add or remove features over time. If we make a change that significantly reduces what you've paid for, we'll tell you in advance, and you can cancel and get a refund for the unused part of your subscription. If we ever decide to close Rational Flag completely, we'll give you at least [30] days' notice and refund any unused part of your subscription.
14. Our responsibility to you
- If we fail to follow these Terms, we're responsible for loss or damage you suffer that is a foreseeable result of our failure or our failure to take reasonable care. We're not responsible for loss or damage that isn't foreseeable.
- We provide the Service for personal use only. We're not responsible for any business losses.
- Nothing in these Terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that can't legally be limited. Nothing affects your legal rights as a consumer.
- Subject to the above, our total liability to you is limited to the amount you've paid us in the 12 months before the problem happened. [A lawyer should confirm this cap is fair for consumers.]
15. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time, for example to reflect new features or changes in the law. If a change is significant, we'll tell you by email or in the app at least [30] days before it takes effect. If you don't agree, you can cancel before then, and we'll refund any unused part of your subscription. The current version is always at rationalflag.com/terms.
16. Law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring proceedings in your local courts, and you keep the protection of your local consumer law. If you have a problem, please contact us first at support@rationalflag.com, and we'll try to sort it out quickly and fairly.
